great to know. I wish I had known about her and her service when I was searching. Let me know what you find. I was so stuck by the language barrier that I couldn't find any info and that was how my daughter wound up being in an americanized progra...
My mamasans are only serving the Courtney/Ishikawa area. And they are SOOO busy that people are on a waiting list! Good luck finding someone. Word of mouth is the best way to get a good one.
Hey Mary, so how are you liking Yomitan? I love the views - which is the main reason we chose to live here!
I'm always up for getting coffee or lunch! We can explore the roads together - it usually takes a while for all the shortcuts my husband takes for me to get used to it. But I've got Google Maps on my phone, so I think we should be good!
Don't apologize for the long response, I didn't mind at all! Have your household goods been delivered yet? Our came in a few weeks ago, and I've been unpacking and organizing (or trying to) since then. There are mountains of boxes calling my name all over the house! I'm pretty obsessive as well, so I can't just put things away randomly. Everything has to have a place, and I can usually tell you where even the smallest thing in my house is. I guess that's not really a good thing with 2 kids (3 if you count my husband) because I'm always having to stop whatever I'm working on to rearrange and reclean after them. I hate it! We live off base too, in Awase. I like my house, but it's not the house of my dreams. Before coming to Oki I had looked at and bookmarked so many houses that I wanted to see, but when the time came to look at them, I realized my 2 cranky kids could not handle days of house hunting. I guess we went with the best of the choices we were given, but I'm sure not the best out there. Still, I like it. I like that it's a house that a Japanese family would have lived in, but is still pretty modern. I've had to have people translate the buttons on the dryer and ACs, but it's been a fun experience. We have a urinal, which I hate, but all our male guests seem to love!
How do you like Vonage and Skype? We haven't decided which one to go with. I want to be able to use video calling feature with Skype, and we bought some kind of thing that connects your phone to the computer so your mobily isn't limited when talking on the phone.
Anyway, I should probably check on my sleeping child...if you need anything, even just someone to vent with, let me know. Have fun in your home!
I think I was recently admiring your house on one of the housing websites! It looks beautiful. We're still pretty new to the island as well. How are you liking it?
No worries Mary. I figured you'd might be busy getting ready for the BIG move=) I hope that the medical situation won't delay your trip here to Oki. Well on a lighter note, you and your family are getting hooked up! How nice that you get to make a quick stop in Hawaii! You all are going to have a blast. I've heard that it is so beautiful there. Make sure to go swimming with some dolphins. My co-worker did that and he said it was just the coolest experience.
I'm glad you got set up okay at the Shogun. I know for a moment it was quite booked. I know this only because my husband just sponsored a new co-worker and he ended up having to book him and his family a hotel room off base. I'm glad you managed to get a room on base because it alleviates the process quite a bit until you get a home set up.
So I'll put you on my calendar for 13 June then. I can't wait! I'll start brainstorming for ideas and locations. It's a good thing that you have photos of your dress posted on your profile page so I can get a better idea of what I'd like to do for you session. I'm sure we'll have to do the session quite early in the morning or late in the evening to beat the heat and humidity, but we'll make it work.
Well, please keep me posted on your trip here and let me know when you make it safely. If you have further questions about anything, please feel free to shoot me a comment or message. Until then, happy packing and keep in touch! Thank for getting back to me Mary!
I'm so sorry for the late reply. I wanted to make sure I had time to send you a thorough response. So my goodness!...I would love to see all of your wedding memories...it sounds like a fairy tale come true! How awesome to have your special day archived in so many different ways. I certainly can't wait for our session in June, which by the way...how does 13 June sound for a tentative date? I'm thinking early morning or in the evening time when it's cooler. Oh, and thank you for giving your blessings to go all out with your dress. It's an absolutely gorgeous dress...you got a good deal on it too lady. It's nice to see that you want to capture it in every way. My husband and I just did the Justice of Peace so I didn't have a wedding dress. I know if I had, I would do exactly what you're doing.
To answer your question...yes, my hubbie is in the mil too. It is nice to have him back home too.
You'll definitely like living off base here. Hopefully, your kids will pick up some Japanese. Can you speak German since you lived in Germany for six years. I'm not sure about the Shogun Inn construction work, but I'll find out for you lady. I don't blame you wanting to help pick out the home you'll be living in for the next three years. Just remember to thoroughly exhaust every housing agency. Don't settle for the first place you see because there are quite a few nice houses here on the island. Plus, you'll be arriving during PCS season so there should be a lot available. Also remember, the further you are from the base...the nicer the house as well.
Please feel free to email me more questions Mary. Hahaha...it's okay if it's a long one...LOL=D
...and thank you for such a quick response as well. I'm just relieved that you're willing to do this session. I know a lot of ladies want to keep their dresses nice to remember that big day and I totally understand that...so I really appreciate your daring spirit=) We'll still keep your gown gorgeous!
Well, to answer you questions...I will be on Oki for a little under two more years. I love it here. This island is gorgeous and the Okinawan lifestyle is so laid back. The bases are pretty fast paced though. I'm in the AF and I do the photography thing part time. It is a full time passion of mine though. After my tour here...I plan to separate to pursue a degree in photography. My father is the one who got me into it when I was in high school and I've doing it ever since (having an artistic background already helped so much so I'm always trying to incorporate that into my photography). I live off base here and I love it. The good thing about living on base, (if you do decide to do that) is you won't have to worry about traffic. Plus, it's just more convenient, but I love being off base.
I don't have a vonage number, but I do have a skype account. I'm sure we'll get real acquainted on here. Once you arrive, if you need help with anything feel free to let me know too. I look forward to more questions. Until then...take care and have a great weekend (I know I will...my hubbie is coming back! He's been gone since September!).
Please bring that gorgeous dress of yours! I would love to photograph you in it. You can add your own personal touch to it too...get as creative as you like. No worries about you arriving in May...I'm already booked for the month of February so by the time you get here it will be perfect. If you'd like...we can set a tentative date so we don't have to worry about fitting you in later. Just let me know what will work best for you since you'll be busy getting situated on this beautiful island. I'm extremely excited now! I have a trash the dress session to look forward to! So what are you willing to do in the dress so I can start thinking of ideas for concepts/locations?
I'm glad you're not shy in front of the camera. It's good to know that you get photos taken frequently. There's a good number of photographers on the island so you'll have no problems getting nice photos of the family. Do you have any questions for me? I look forward to hearing from and please keep in touch by keeping me posted on your arrival here on Okinawa. If you have questions in general about island...fire away at that as well. Until then...Peace!
WE HAVE ARRIVED!!
We got here last week on May 8th. The week has been one heck of a whirlwind, but we have accomplished a lot. We have already purchased a van and a car, plus found a Brand New Home that we are in love with up in Yomitan that has the most breathtaking view of the ocean. Will be updating later with more pics and details.
You can see a lot about us and our family here:

FYI: Only 2 of our children will be making the move with us. The other's live with the "other" parents!
