We've had really good luck with online shopping from Amazon and JCPenny. I have a few things coming from Kohls and the Children's Place, so we'll see how long those take. I'm having a delay getting our chocolate from Seattle (thank you gift for our…
Leslie,
The TB test is not bad at all, its just a little injection in your arm that they check two days later when you come back. With shot records, they will look in the computer system, your record, and your shot card to see what you're missing.…
We ordered six thermal/lightout panels and six sheer panels for the sliding doors online from JCPenny (we live off base). It got here in about a week, no hassle. My home can turn into a batcave even with the sun beating down on the glass doors and i…
Hi Leslie,
Hang in there. My husband is a Marine and we came from a Navy base.
Here's what we had to do: fill out each packet for each family member, make an annual exam for myself, get the kids' physicals done (we were told we didn't need it, the…
Hi Kelly,
Do you know where in Okinawa your husband will be stationed? My husband is at Kinser, we got here Feb 27th (on a Friday) and our housing appt was for the following Thursday. We could have moved into a 3 bdroom tower unit on Kinser (nothin…
We got some of ours at the TodayO!K Store and really liked some at The Grace (same building), if you have a chance to visit there's a lot of selection there. For the main windows we ordered from JCPenny because we wanted the thermal/light out curtai…
Shevles and Baskets. A lot of baskets. I also live in the Water Front Manor and our building does have quite a bit of storage space (utility room for the washer/dryer, entry way built in shoe cabinet, pantry room, another storage room, bike storage…
Hi! My name is Hyla and our family has been here for about a month. I'm finally settling in enough to have (more) fun! My 3 year old daughter and I (and my 4 yr old son during school breaks/holidays...and, of course, my husband when he can) plan on…
We're newbies! We arrived early in March and are doing pretty well settling in. The four of us (Self, Husband Adam, 4 year old son David, and 3 year old daughter Nora) are excited to be here.
Hey- my daughter goes to Sunshine Montessori as well. Jungsook and her staff are just great. We've probably passed each other by many times. This island is fascinating and I love to get out and explore it - if you ever want an adventure buddy, just drop me a line!
Hi! I remembered you mentioned getting blackout curtains from JC...do you recall which ones? I'm looking at the Wendy Thermal ones, but they don't seem to have great reviews. My house has TONS of windows and the rooms get crazy hot. Thanks.
I want to put Reanna in the same daycare as your son and I think they have an open registration in the beginning of May. I'm going to make sure of those dates before I leave. I really want to live on base. I know that there are those who think those who lives on base tend to stick close to the fenceline but I'm not afraid to get out past the gates and really experience Japan. I want my kids to be able to make friends, have their friends come over and play or visa versa. Anyway, I'll have to write more later. It's just after 7 am here and I have to get the children up and ready for school...yay! I have the famous transportation appt today! LOL Lizz
As it turns out, Erik will be working on Kadena. He starts in processing today. I have my transportation appt tomorrow (Tuesday) to schedule the day for our stuff to be packed up. I have a 5 yr son, Jeremiah, who will be 6 in May. I don't know if I'll put him back in school to finish kindergarten or if I'll just keep him out till next school year. It depends on how much longer they have till the end of the year. And I have a 2 yr old that I'm hoping to put in some kind of daycare. I'm kinda worried though because it doesn't seem as though there are very many daycares that are open all week long, all day long. I'm a big believer in having the kids in some sort of child care. I believe she will learn more if she's around children her own age. You know? Anyway, I would love to get in some good exploring in. We'll set something up as soon as we can. Talk to you soon Lizz
Good to hear everything's falling into place. It's very reassuring. We have the stress of selling one of our cars right now. I posted it on every site I could find. I'm just not too optimistic about being able to complete the sale in 3 weeks. Other than that, we're just counting down the days until we get there. It's a very odd feeling. I'm excited about the new experience, but heartbroken that I'll be leaving my family, and missing out on birthdays, graduations, holidays... Is life there starting to feel normal?
Wow, your place seems to be just what we're looking for. I really want an extra room for a playroom. we have one now, and it keeps the toys confined in one space, for the most part. From the name of the building, I take it you're right by the beach?
Tell me more about the childcare voucher?!?! Were you able to get childcare for both of them for the Newcomer's Brief? My 4 year old has a spot reserved, but my then 1 year old does not, though he's on the waiting list. Is your 4 year old going to be going to preschool? I've been looking into the preschools there. Kuwae Preschool in Lester sounded great to me. They have registration in May. Great to know about JC delivering. I have some rugs and panels, but I still have to shop around for more. Is your apt 3 bedrooms? Where did you move from?
Your new place sounds great. How many floors is it? I'm afraid of anything above the 2nd floor! What agency did you use? We really want to live off base, but the online listings that I've been looking at aren't too impressive...at least not the ones in our price range. We have 4 weeks until the move, hopefully there will be nicer places available by then. That's interesting that the agencies weren't willing to negotiate on the prices. I had my hopes up of getting into a house a bit above our BAH cap. How far are you from Kinser...did I ask that already? Thanks for reminding me about rugs and curtains! They're on my mental "to buy" list. Will your son be going to preschool soon? My daughter should be starting in September, though not sure where yet. She'll be 4 in July. Keep in touch..I'm sure I'll have more questions in the weeks to come.
Hi Hyla..sorry, I have no info for you, but your situation seems like what ours will be like when we arrive in about 4 weeks. I'd like to live in the Chatan area, and my husband's gonna be working in Kinser. Like you, I've been living on Okinawa Hai for some time! There's such great information here. I feel much more ready for the move than I did before discovering it. Anyway, would you mind sharing your impression of the area, or whatever area you decide on living in, in the next few weeks. Also, I'm curious why you're not living near Kinser? How far of a drive is that from Chatan? Best of luck to you.
