Obama Takes Down Blagojevich

With Rod Blagojevich's machinations now laid bare, everyone's wondering about the Illinois governor's relationship with the president-elect. It turns out, reports The New York Times, that it was a phone call three months ago from Barack Obama that indirectly led to Blagojevich's downfall. A call from Obama to the president of the Illinois Senate helped spur the body to override Blagojevich's veto of a state ethics bill. Blagojevich then began pressing state contractors for campaign contributions, which led to the wiretap that eventually overheard him trying to auction off Obama's U.S. Senate seat. Beyond that bit of chance, The Washington Post reports that "Federal prosecutors said flatly that there is no evidence of involvement by the president-elect in allegations that Blagojevich attempted to sell Obama's vacant Senate seat to the highest bidder."

[Haven't been this disgusted with an elected official since Randall "Duke" Cunningham.]

Good news for all of us.
You might remember him from when someone forced his resignation because he did not agree with them. Hmmm.

A group is forming to help promote various issues to the new administration. If you would like to get involved this is an excellent time. The group is bottom up and is making decisions by this Monday as to what issues will make up its agenda. It is on facebook and can be found at http://www.facebook.com/groups.php?ref=sb#/group.php?gid=58474123272
It already has about 50 members Democrats, Republicans, ex-Republicans, Conservatives, Liberals one or two might even be (dare I say) community activists.
Free and open to the public the group will pick the issues its members say are important and pursue promotion of those issues with the Executive and Legislative branches of the Federal Government.
Members will work collaboratively (online) to produce letters or documents for submission to the branches.

I wonder. That sounds like a creative approach to countering violent extremists, also known as terrorists. It seems to me the neo-conservatives' backward agenda was certainly enamoured with WAR as much more than "the last resort". With a pragmatic and reasonable man as our new president, this would be the optimum timing to take a new approach to counter-terrorism and see how it works!

Rand Corporation has studied how terrorist groups are dismantled. They say that police and intelligence agencies are effective (a previous administration had supported this approach) and that military should be withdrawn and the term "War on Terrorism"should be phased out.
Any thoughts?

The Polls in the US have opened in some places. Several towns in New Hampshire open at midnight just to vote first.
Dixville Notch returns 15 for Obama, 6 for McCain
Hart's Location returns 17 for Obama, 10 for McCain
These town's are not known for predicting the winning in the overall race but they have have picked the Republican candidate in every election since 1972.
East coast polls have already opened.
Anyone who might be able and interested is welcomed to stop by the USO theater today from 9am to 2pm Japanese time to see the results as the polls close in the States.

I seem to be able to recall the Carter years, too. Inflation was an issue not corrupt leadership running our country into the ground like the Republicans of late. Jonathan, your definition of socialism here clearly shows that Obama is not one. He is simply following a progressive tax system (one set up by the very same Republican that MCBush claims inspires him, Teddy Roosevelt! though never have I heard McCain mention TR's socialistic tendencies.) Where more people would have to pay their fair share. Also, allowing for 95% of the population to get a tax cut.
The socialist red herring is simply a cheap political ploy that is born of the crys of communist that use to work for the Republicans. Like when putting clorine in drinking water. One Congressional Republican actually called it a Communist plot because it would help everone. Ridiculous.

Just don't guite agree with you, Jonathan. Having lived through the "Carter years" and now having lived through the "Bush years" all I can say is today I am better off then when I was living during the "Carter years" But, that what our elections are for so that we can express our different opinions by voting.
