Feedback on Hai

We have one question. What would it take to make Okinawa Hai and/or Hai Society better? This blog is for you so no one knows better than you what you want. Please play fair. Anything below the belt will be deleted.

Renee,

I wish I were fancy enough to come up with a button like that!

You can press VIEW ALL at the bottom and then choose to view the LATEST ACTIVITY in discussions. Like HERE.

Much better! Thank you.

Meredith, that's much better. Maybe, too, there could be a "view more from the last 24 hours" button? I, too, agree with Heather, that it is easier to view a thread if it starts with the first post, instead of the most current.

Heather, point taken. I just put it out as an idea to get feedback. Appreciate your comment.

Also, I agree that the questions are off the main page to fast. If posted during Oki timeframe it is usually off when someone in the US logs on. Same can be true in reverse post in US and can sometimes be off when Oki members log on.

Hi, Mere. I have a critique on the main page. While I like that the question is now listed with each thread, I’m not digging that the amount has gone down to 5. It kicks the threads off the main page too soon and people are not getting answers (it takes a few days for people to respond sometimes). And I, for one, don’t troll the forums. I just answer whatever questions are on the main page and that’s it. On an especially busy day, someone will ask a question, and then it will be off the main page within an hour. :(

And Ed, to answer your question (on the last post), I don't like that idea at all. Sorry. It would make the thread hard to follow.

Meredith, regarding okinawahai.com is there some way that the comments which are posted could be reversed so that the most current info could come first with the older info following. For example a comment to "E-6 living on-base or off-base" needs to click on the "next" at page bottom. Wouldn't be better for newbie to begin with the most current info and read back to the beginning? Just a thought.

What do the others think?

Our 431 members breakdown as follows:

218 Listed by first name only
55 Listed by first name & initial only
124 Listed by first & last name
34 Listed by a screen name

Personally I'm not confortable about security for Facebook & My Space BUT, Meredith, as you know when it comes to computers I am such a novice.

Leah,

Your example about the screen names versus real names totally helped me understand what you meant. I didn't get what you were talking about initially and PLEASE bring on the feedback as much as you can. I apologize if you felt like I was not receptive to your ideas. It wasn't that at all but more that I couldn't picture what you meant.

I have to look into seeing if Ning will allow us to search for a members name as ask to be friends with a person in the Facebook fashion. That would be PERFECT!

Let me look into that and get back to you all. Again, thanks for the feedback. I just need things spelled out for me VERY clearly most of the time!

Thanks, Leah!

Whoa! I am not proposing that everyone give up their annonimity in the least. But it would be awesome if we had an easier way of finding each other online hereif anyone wants to. I am not suggesting anyone do anything to put themselves at risk, I get that so everyone can jump back a big step.

Basically, how I thought of this idea was this...I was at one of the markets I found listed on Okinawa Hai. Great place! So I was looking at some mystery fruit and saw two other women (obviously not locals) also discussing the fruit and I started chatting with them. They were great, nice ladies. And they said, "Do you Okinawa Hai or Hai Society?" And I said "Of course!" So they said "Maybe we'll see you there then!" So, I got their first names, and would love to chat with them online, but without knowing their screen names....nada. And geez! How middle school does this sound?! It's not like any of us were in any position to be exchanging screen names right there in the market over the fruit (nor did I even think of it), but how great would it be to chat them up on Okinawa Hai Society?

I am not really proposing a total invasion of privacy here. It's really not much different than being able to look someone up on Facebook or MySpace and having to receive permission from them to "view" their information or sending them an initial email that they then choose whether or not to respond to. I just want some other way to sort through the 400+ members to try and contact someone I know is also a member but that I dont have an acutal screen name for, because so few people use their names or photos on here. You asked for improvement ideas, and this was something that had recently happened to me and so I suggested it. Okinawa Hai Society is to help connect us to each other in our experiences here, so that it what I was proposing, connecting to each other. I did not say it wasn't flawed, nor that there could be a better safer way of doing it. This is just a starting point.
