Pcsing and trying to deal with the quarantine regs.

I am pscing back to Okinawa (civilian DoD) and notice they have changed the regs. Previously, I could "in-house" quanantine my pets off base (Hamagawa, etc) but now it seems that it's on base only. Shogun is remodeling their pet rooms and there is no place I know of to stay with my pets. They are both healthy but simply must wait the FAVIN time requirment. By the time I get there....that will entail 4 more months. Any one have any ideas????

Hi,We were in a similiar situation last year and so, while we stayed at Shogun we kenneled our dogs at the kennel on base "Karing Kennels"Then you basically have to provide food and come for visits. As far as in house quarantine that can only be done if you are living on base.Otherwise if you choose to live off base then you can kennel them or find a family that is willing to foster them until your quarantine date is up.that is the main reason we live on base because of that factor.Good Luck.Rea

Thanks Rea....I was hoping there was a way out of this. Shogun has pet rooms now but they are remodeling during prime PCS season. Go figure!
Do the pet authorities meet you at the plane and take your animals?

Somewhat they do.You have to show all paperwok and then they release them to you and, out you go!They don't ask where your taking them.We really missed them while they were kenneled and it was good there as far as I saw everything was always clean and we even had them groomed while they were there.

ANd as far as when their time is up....I guess that's just the honor system?? It depends on when the blood was drawn apparantly. Ok, well, this gives me something to go on. Thanks again.

There is one other option if you don't want to kennel or live on base. If you can find someone else to take your animals into their onbase home, you may leave them with those individuals for the quarantine period. I think (not sure on this part) that they aren't supposed to have pets there themselves though. So, you could put a classified ad out asking for this service. It could save you some money too. I found this info out when I was kenneling out cat for a week when we arrived to the island. There was a couple there picking up their dog to take it to live with someone else. It sounded like a cool idea. Hope this helps:)

I love this option!!! Maybe I can get someone to look after the animals until a pet room opens up at the Shogun. Thanks Suzy!

I've heard that Karing Kennels has a list of people who are willing to foster animals during their quarantine. As for being released from quarantine, I had to take our dogs to the vet with all their paperwork. Then they "released" them for us. I believe the vet then sends the release paperwork to the proper Japanese authorities.

I just arrived on island with my dog.
He has about 40days left on the quarantine.
I didn't want to put him at the Karing Kennel on base so I found a lady who watches pets at her house on Kadena.
I can give her info if you like.

Thanks for all of your help everyone. I just found out that I can get a pet room at the TLF for at least a month. Whew! Megumi, I'd like the info on the lady that takes care of pets on base please. Okinawa, here we come!

hi i am pcsing there in month, i am bringing my cat with me. since he wont be done with his 180 days prior to arrival i am having him stay with a friend on base until he is finished with his quarentine. we will be staying on foster in lodging until we get a house. the only options are living on base with friends until time is up or going to karing kennels until 180days are up. i kknow these new regs are difficult but atleast we get to bring them even if time is not done. good luck.

the other thing is that the vet never asks where they are staying. this is what i was told

yep...I've wondered about that. In my mind, the whole quarantine is to deter people from bringing pets rather than making sure they don't have rabies. If their favin test levels are up to par....6 months quarantine???? Hmmmm.....so the vet doesn't ask huh?!
