Ok, I don't know how to search on this forum, so please excuse me if this has been asked.

My daughter broke her titanium RayBan glasses (for sight, not sunglasses). Her (ugh, hmm) FATHER took her for her yearly exam (that tricare pays for) while she was home visiting in August, and bought her new glasses. (Even though I only asked for sports goggles for basketball, and he knows she broke 3 pairs of frames last year alone) Well, being the wonderful guy he is, I don't have her prescription, and it is "in the mail" he says. But in the meantime, my daughter can not see ANYTHING.
I was looking into possible getting her contacts, as she turns 12 in december - and normally you can go home with those the same day (at least in the states). I called on base optical (kadena, we are AF) and they don't see dependents anymore. So I went to the Kdena BX, and they don't have an appointment until DECEMBER?!?!?!? The middle of december!!! What is she supposed to do until then??
My question is, do you know anywhere that I can take her to get an exam for either contacts or glasses that will not take that long? I am not joking when I say she NEEDS these glasses to see, school on monday is going to be rough for her.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Not sure if you can be seen on Lester but if so we got an appt within a week or so and I am sure if it was an emergency we could have been seen sooner. I am not sure how the medical stuff works here with AF vs Marines etc but the number for Lester optical is 643-7387 - they see dependents on Tue and Thrs.

Also did you check the optical over on Foster in the concession mall next to the PX? I think I saw one in there...maybe they can see her sooner.

Can you somehow tape them up or something just for now? Also MOST places can take your current lenses and "read" them to get the prescription....I have rarely had a written script with me when I went to get glasses and this was always done on the spot.

Might be worth getting an extra cheapie pair for emergencies when you do get seen since you said she has done this before.

Good luck!

Can't you call the dr that she saw in the states and have them fax the script to your hubby's office or if you have a fax at home?

Oh, meant to say, that contacts are a big responsibility. I don't even know if a dr. would prescribe them for a 12 year old, but if she has troubles taking care of her glasses, contacts probably aren't right for her. JMO. Also, the dr. office in the states could maybe call in the script to wherever you want to buy them.

I got her glasses in 30 minutes today at San-A.

I tried having them read the lens at Kadena concession, they don't do that.

As far as the contacts go, yes, most doctors will give them at the age of 12. The age of 12 is when I got my contacts. I agree they are a big responsibility, though I wouldn't consider getting them for my daughter if I didn't feel she could handle them and take care of them properly. She can cause some serious damage to her eyes if she doesn't take care of them. I know this. So, thank you for the concern, but her frames breaking has nothing to do with her not being responsible with them. She is quite active in sports, and she is quite hard on them. Because of this, we normally buy her cheaper frames knowing they won't last too super long.

Either way .. . thank you for all your help ladies. But we got some new ones!!! I got the prescription from the states, and took it to San A (Hamby) and they did her frames/lenses in 30 minutes!! Hopefully they will last through basketball season!!

Anastasia- Just want to add that I began using contacts when I was 10 and have been wearing them for 19 years. I'm so glad my mom made that choice for me! For me, once on, they are less maintenance and hassle than glasses.

BTW, can you get a contact prescription at San-A?
